Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991) REVIEW - PG-13 | 1h 42min | Adventure, Drama, Romance

Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991)

PG-13 | 1h 42min | AdventureDramaRomance

We open the film with a ship finding the craft with our original characters in it, Richard and Emmeline dead and Paddy alive. Established in the first film, the only word Paddy ever says is "Richard", so the crew assumes Richard is the infant's name. Taken in by Sarah, a widow with an infant baby girl Lilli. Struck by cholera, the crew of the ship start to die and the captain sets Sarah, Richard, Lilli and a healthy crew member on a lifeboat in an attempt to preserve their lives. And so, the story begins.

I enjoyed the film.  I hate spoilers so I’ll leave you to watch it for yourself.  I recognized both actors, Richard from TV series Charmed and Lilli from Resident Evil movies.  Of course, they were much younger in this film.  Some will say this is unrealistic to which I say ‘of course’ but that’s not the point.  We enjoy movies to getaway from reality and dream and pretend and daydream as a respite and something to enjoy together and talk about.  If someone mentions, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ or ‘ELF’ or ‘The Greatest Showman’ and you’ve also seen those films you immediately have something in common and can discuss it and build from there.  If you never read a book or watch a movie you severely limit yourself because normal day to day living can only take you so far.  But reading or a film can take us to other worlds in an instant and back again safely.  We all need diversions regardless of what they are.  Sports, outdoor adventures, sailing, dance, flying, a theme park, traveling with a friend or spouse, picnics & parties, and the list is endless.

I found the film quite moving at times.  Here is one quote I liked:

Richard: I feel like crying.

Lilli: So do I.

Richard: I want us to be husband and wife.

Lilli: Yes. Always.

[they kiss passionately]

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) REVEIW PG-13 | 2h | Comedy, Drama, Romance

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

PG-13 | 2h | ComedyDramaRomance

It was a fun watch.  I saw things I never knew existed and I’m 61 years old.  It also confirmed what I already knew – that money is nice, but can’t buy happiness.  I liked the family dedication and I think we could learn some things from the past, but of course each generation must make things their own.  Variety is the spice of life.  Both traditions of the past and those who wish to change everything can both be taken too far.  A balance is what is needed.  Lots a good quotes - here a just a few:

Astrid:  God forbid we lose the ancient Chinese tradition of guilting your children.

Rachel Chu: [Incredulous] You have a cocktail dress in your trunk?  Peik Lin Goh: I'm not an animal, Rachel.

Astrid:  Well, you grow up your whole lives together, you make excuses for people. Specially the morons.

Rachel, Peik Lin and Astrid were my favorite characters.  Enjoy.

Ballet Shoes (2007) REVIEW - PG | 1h 25min | Drama, Family

Ballet Shoes (2007)

PG | 1h 25min | DramaFamily | TV Movie

Pauline (Emma Watson), Petrova (Yasmin Paige), and Posy Fossil (Lucy Boynton) live with Sylvia Brown (Emilia Fox), their guardian. Money is tight so they take in three boarders - a garage owner, a retired English professor, and a dance teacher. The dance teacher gets the girls accepted at her school and the three go on stage to help raise money. Each discovers has her own dreams - Pauline as an actress, Petrova to be a pilot, and Posy to be a ballerina.

Based on the book of the same name it’s about three adopted girls just after the First World War.  I love this story and how girls love for each other.  I vow. I liked the following quotes:

“There is no doubt a new dress is a help under all circumstances.”

“During the last six months the little girl Harriet, without her noticing it, had disappeared and a new Harriet had taken her place. A Harriet who looked much the same outside but was more of a person inside.”

“It was all very well to be ambitious, but ambition should not kill the nice qualities in you.”

“Dignity is trained into royal children before they can toddle, graciousness, consideration for others, an unshakable belief in the greatness of their position.”

The last quote seems to describe a Christian who understand they are  -- a child of the king of kings and lord of lords.  Never lording it over others, but a form of meekness and strength under control of goodness.  Jesus was creator of all things, yet he allowed himself to suffer as we suffer and grow up in utter obscurity in Nazareth.  Those who lived back then would say “can anything good come from Nazareth?”

If you let yourself, I think almost anyone can relate to someone in the film.  Young or old.  I hope you relish it as much as I.

A Simple Favor (2018) REVIEW

A Simple Favor (2018)

R | 1h 57min | ComedyCrimeMystery

No one under 18 should see this one.  Stephanie, a widowed mother, who also runs a cooking vlog, befriends Emily, a well-dressed crass beautiful miserable secretive woman whose child goes to the same elementary school as Stephanie's. Suddenly Emily goes missing and Stephanie starts investigating – let the movie begin.

It’s hard to meld mystery crime and comedy and make it work but this one does it.
Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick both do a tremendous job with their characters.  Watch with your bff - the girls are amazing, and this movie is a fun watch – adults only.

Those who hate chick flicks don’t worry. Good dialogue with good twists that keep you guessing.  The clothing and style in the film are amazing. This film should be seen by people who enjoy a good mystery. This movie is hard to explain without ruining it.  If you watch it, see if you don’t enjoy detective Summerville played by Bashir Salahuddin as much as we did.

Oh and there is an alternative ending to watch if you buy the DVD or possibly you may find it on Youtube

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) REVIEW

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

PG-13 |

1h 56 Min

ActionAdventureComedy

I enjoyed this 1960s era film. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced into a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.   Alicia Vikander plays Gaby a beautiful woman who somehow is involved. Gaby is easy on the eyes and makes the film.  I specifically liked the dance / wrestling scene.  It’s almost like a fashion show which I loved.  You couldn’t find three more good looking people.  The cast had great chemistry and I almost thought I was back in the 60s while I was watching this one.
