City of Angels (1998) REVIEW PG-13 | 1h 54min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

City of Angels (1998)

PG-13 | 1h 54min | DramaFantasyRomance   Stars:   Nicolas CageMeg RyanAndre Braugher

I really really like this movie.  Some things are common to all humans and in this one I think that common thread is that we all don’t appreciate the magic of life enough.  How amazing it is that we can feel anything.  The sun on our face.  A good cry.  The touch of another person.  How we all scream if we step into a cold shower my accident.  Seth is an angel who accompanies the spirits of the dead to the ever after. He asks them all what they liked best in life.  One little girl said pajamas.  When in the hospital he sees Dr. Maggie Rice, a brilliant young heart surgeon and the magic begins.  I guess its no wonder I like it because many of my all-time favorite movies include some fantasy such as The Family Man which oddly enough stars Nicholas Cage also.  Another is the Little Princess 1995 version and On Borrowed Time 1939.

I love good quotes and this movie has plenty:

Seth: Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

------

Seth: Why do people cry?

Maggie: What do you mean?

Seth: I mean, what happens physically?

Maggie: Well... umm... tear ducts operate on a normal basis to lubricate and protect the eye and when you have an emotion they overact and create tears.

Seth: Why? Why do they overact?

Maggie: [pause] I don't know.

Seth: Maybe... maybe emotion becomes so intense your body just can't contain it. Your mind and your feelings become too powerful, and your body weeps.

-----------

Maggie Rice: Do you feel that?

Seth: Yes.

Maggie Rice: And that? How's it feel? Tell me what it feels like.

Seth: I can't.

Maggie Rice: Try.

Seth: Warm. Aching.

Maggie Rice: It's okay. We fit together.

Seth: I know.

Maggie Rice: We were made to fit together.

-------------

Maggie: What happened?

Seth: Free will.

Meg Ryan is wonderful as a zealous doctor who never sleeps. Her life and the intersection of Seth the angel captivated me.  You could say it’s a woman’s movie, but I’m a man and loved it.

Dennis Franz nails his role.  I won’t say anymore.

I’m a firm believer the less you know about a movie ahead of time the better. Bored_Dragon commented on their imdb channel that this film is one of the most beautiful and most powerful love stories ever filmed. Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan are excellent in leading roles and they have fantastic chemistry together. To me, this movie is the perfection of its genre. I couldn’t have said it better.

I also loved the music choices for the movie.  A must see for anyone who enjoys romance.
