Tulip Fever (2017) REVIERW -- R | 1h 45min | Drama, Romance

Tulip Fever (2017)

R | 1h 45min | DramaRomance

Stars:  Alicia VikanderDane DeHaanJack O'Connell

QUOTE:  Abbess: Never underestimate God. He forgets nothing. (Judy Dench)

I thoroughly enjoy good stories like this give us a glimpse into a sliver of history.  I often imagine myself in the films and experiencing life from their perspective and timeframe.  The trade and sale of tulips and tulip bulbs is booming in Holland circa 1634. A wealthy Amsterdam merchant Cornelis Sandvoort who lost his first wife and two children to a plague weds young Sophia from the orphanage.  So, the story begins.

Cornelis hires the young painter Jan van Loos to have a double portrait made with his young wife Sophia. The movie has twists and turns and is never slow.  Emotions run high and its easy to relate to the characters.  All movies are better on the big screen and this one is no exception.

Cornelis comes to terms with his sin and it affects his future and the future of those around him.  It made me think about my own life and how I deal with others in my sphere of influence.  It’s a well written story and I enjoyed it.  The nudity fly’s by quickly and you can easily turn away the few times it occurs if you desire.  Sophia is easy on the eyes.

SPOILER:  Lastly I'd like to mention the forgiveness showed in the film moved me.  It reminded me of how God came in flesh and gave himself on the cross so that we may live.  The end would have been so much different without the forgiveness accompanied by giving of the house to Maria to raise her family.  It also made me warm inside that Cornelis named Maria's new baby Sophia and how they thanked God for all their blessings.

City of Angels (1998) REVIEW PG-13 | 1h 54min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

City of Angels (1998)

PG-13 | 1h 54min | DramaFantasyRomance   Stars:   Nicolas CageMeg RyanAndre Braugher

I really really like this movie.  Some things are common to all humans and in this one I think that common thread is that we all don’t appreciate the magic of life enough.  How amazing it is that we can feel anything.  The sun on our face.  A good cry.  The touch of another person.  How we all scream if we step into a cold shower my accident.  Seth is an angel who accompanies the spirits of the dead to the ever after. He asks them all what they liked best in life.  One little girl said pajamas.  When in the hospital he sees Dr. Maggie Rice, a brilliant young heart surgeon and the magic begins.  I guess its no wonder I like it because many of my all-time favorite movies include some fantasy such as The Family Man which oddly enough stars Nicholas Cage also.  Another is the Little Princess 1995 version and On Borrowed Time 1939.

I love good quotes and this movie has plenty:

Seth: Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

------

Seth: Why do people cry?

Maggie: What do you mean?

Seth: I mean, what happens physically?

Maggie: Well... umm... tear ducts operate on a normal basis to lubricate and protect the eye and when you have an emotion they overact and create tears.

Seth: Why? Why do they overact?

Maggie: [pause] I don't know.

Seth: Maybe... maybe emotion becomes so intense your body just can't contain it. Your mind and your feelings become too powerful, and your body weeps.

-----------

Maggie Rice: Do you feel that?

Seth: Yes.

Maggie Rice: And that? How's it feel? Tell me what it feels like.

Seth: I can't.

Maggie Rice: Try.

Seth: Warm. Aching.

Maggie Rice: It's okay. We fit together.

Seth: I know.

Maggie Rice: We were made to fit together.

-------------

Maggie: What happened?

Seth: Free will.

--------------

Meg Ryan is wonderful as a zealous doctor who never sleeps. Her life and the intersection of Seth the angel captivated me.  You could say it’s a woman’s movie, but I’m a man and loved it.

Dennis Franz nails his role.  I won’t say anymore.

I’m a firm believer the less you know about a movie ahead of time the better. Bored_Dragon commented on their imdb channel that this film is one of the most beautiful and most powerful love stories ever filmed. Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan are excellent in leading roles and they have fantastic chemistry together. To me, this movie is the perfection of its genre. I couldn’t have said it better.

I also loved the music choices for the movie.  A must see for anyone who enjoys romance.

Redemption (2013) Hummingbird (original title) REVIEW -- R | 1h 40min | Action, Crime, Drama

Redemption (2013)  Hummingbird (original title)

R | 1h 40min | ActionCrimeDrama

Stars:   Jason StathamAgata Buzek

I love the character development and clear picture of the real world this film portrays.  Nothing can prepare a man for the horrors of war – it changes you.  Joey Smith, a damaged Special Forces deserter ends up homeless wandering London's bustling streets.  Little by little, as he struggles to rebuild his life circumstances converge that inevitably, force him to avenge a friend.  Redemption film title was used in the USA probably because he needs it so badly.  Hummingbird the overseas title was probably used because he often has random hallucinations of the men he killed as revenge for his buddy’s deaths and of "hummingbirds", the aerial drones used in Afghanistan.

I really enjoyed Agata Buzek who plays Cristina, a love interest role is an altruistic nun who cares for Joey. The action scenes reminded me of the Leon the professional film.  No messing around just quick and over.  Minimal talking when force is necessary.  Also, like Tuco in the classic film Good Bad and the Ugly
"When You Have to Shoot, Shoot. Don't Talk."

Quote:
Joey: You know why she ended up in the river? Because that's what the river's for. To wash away girls when they're finished with them!

The movie also reminded me of the different worlds people live & die in.  Those who go to work and raise a family in trying not to think of the atrocities all around them such as human trafficking, civil wars (Syrian civil war for instance has been going on for over 10 years), water and food shortages worldwide, drug wars, religious persecution such as Uyghur people group in China estimated 1-3 million currently in prison camps in the year 2021, the purging of our babies under the guise of Planned Parenthood genocide clinics (example there should be 80 million black Americans in the year 2020, but because of abortions the census numbers are just under 48 million).  The child pornography industry, sweat shops across globe for the fashion industry, and the list goes on. None of this is new and we can’t help anyone else unless we first take care of our own families and citizens.  Good people have always cried out to God for help and he simply tells us to live a quiet godly life minding our own business and lightening others burdens when we can.  Most around the world can barely provide for our own family’s needs.  By living a godly life in a small way, we may help others in some measure lightening their burden in Jesus name.

Pit and the Pendulum (1961) REVIEW R | 1h 20min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

Pit and the Pendulum (1961)

R | 1h 20min | DramaHorrorMystery

Stars:  Vincent PriceBarbara SteeleJohn Kerr

Francis Barnard goes to Spain, when he hears his sister Elizabeth has died. Her husband Nicholas Medina, the son of a torturer of the Spanish Inquisition, tells him she has died of a blood disease, but Francis finds this hard to believe. And the mystery begins.  The suspense is classic old school horror.  I don’t typically like scary movies, but I like older ones better than modern gore and blood baths.

SPOILER ALERT:
Francis learns that Nicholas is a traumatized man that witnessed as a boy the murder of his uncle Bartolome and his adulterous mother Isabella by his father.

The moral I get from this story is that of Karma and reaping what we sow and maybe some genetic heritage that we end up like our parents whether we want to or not. Only with God can we hope to break the curses of our family lines.  Each generation must choose for themselves how they will live.

I think Christianity gets a bad rap at times unintentionally in these type movies.  Folks think the Spanish Inquisition and Crusades were horrible but never mention the atrocities that led up to them.  It’s a thin pancake that doesn’t have two sides. I'm not justifying them because I'm not qualified, but this I do know.

Christ is love, but true love demands justice and justice demands controlled violence at times like war and prison and the death penalty.  Anyone who has family that has been a victim understands this all too well.  God would have nothing to do with the torture chamber in this film regardless of what the Church did back then. God explains it this way:  Not all who claim the name of Christ are Christ’s.

The Narrow Gate

Matthew 7: 13“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.

The Tree and Its Fruit

15“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

Many false teachers have led many astray through the ages, but that is not God’s fault.  As a matter of fact, the Bible warns us they will come and deceive many.  Free Will has caused the world situation you now live in.  Not God.  If God was going to control every act and word spoken, He would never have allowed mankind to sin in the first place.  But since we did mess things up, He sent us a savior.  And best of all -- salvation is free and cannot be earned by any deed or good works.  It is by faith alone in Christ alone (all done in the heart and mind) lest anyone should boast.

A Perfect World (1993) REVIEW PG-13 | 2h 18min | Crime, Drama

A Perfect World (1993)

PG-13 | 2h 18min | CrimeDrama

Stars:  Kevin CostnerClint EastwoodLaura Dern

I’m surprised I never saw this film.  The entire movie is a manhunt and yet you find yourself engrossed in the characters.  If you follow my reviews, you know character development is important to me and this one delivers.  The film is the story of all of us.  Who would any of us be without those who lovingly & sacrificially raise us?  Of course, this doesn’t guarantee anything, but being raised in a loving environment with both a mother and father figure is an advantage not everyone gets.  The movie points out that ‘being there’ can make all the difference.  Not necessarily being perfect parents, but doing life together knowing someone cares and has your back.  The film points to fathers specifically which I would agree -- is more important than most are willing to admit.

The ending is very thought provoking both by what the boy does and what Cling Eastwood’s character says.

I was left with the feeling of being very blessed to have the parents and family I did.  And how important it can be there for friends and family.  It also reminded me of a true story I heard a long time ago about a teenage boy who had decided to kill himself after school and between class periods he was walking down the hall and dropped some of his books in the crowded hall and instead of helping him some other boys kicked his books down the hall.  Seeing this one boy for whatever reason stooped down and helped the boy pickup his books.  They struck up a conversation and chuckled together and before going their separate ways the one boy asked the boy who dropped his books if you wanted to come over to his house and play video games after school.  Though he was surprised he said sure and he never did kill himself.  The only way we know about this is that at his college graduation he asked to say a few words and shared the story that not even his friend knew.  His simple act of kindness saved another’s life and prevented untold negative consequences to friends and family.

One life touches so many others.  It leaves an awful hole when we’re not there to encourage someone or help or love.

Goya's Ghosts (2006) REVIEW - R | 1h 53min Drama

Goya's Ghosts (2006)     R | 1h 53min  Drama

Stars:  Javier BardemNatalie PortmanStellan Skarsgård

No one under age 18.  This film shows us how people are overwhelmed by circumstance.   Goya is an observer or witness if you will of his time.   The protagonist of the story is Lorenzo the priest, whose life is totally changed by big historical events.  Goya's Ghosts could be those who he witnessed and was obsessed with.  He desired to help but the best he could do was paint what he saw.  The film shows that we are all pawns of history, who strut and fret on the stage of life and then are gone. This is exactly what Solomon wrote about in Ecclesiastes.  The trick is to find meaning in the chaos.  Not meaning created in our own minds, but finding the One who created mankind and who loves His creation too much to leave us alone.  Some say “where is God?”  He is where he has always been right there with us on the cross and in our good times and bad.  This story illuminates the folly of any regime.  The film sends us to another time and place as if seen through Francisco de Goya's eyes.

The film teaches us that principles and ideas have consequences.  And ultimately, it’s the people that do harm as a result. Characters are very human, with many flaws.  If we are honest, we find ourselves even relating to the villains of the story.

The same goes for guns.  Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.  More people die each year in motor vehicles than by guns, but no one wants motor vehicles banned.

Even when Jesus was on this earth false teachers abounded spreading lies and exploiting people for their own dark motives.  When we bathe a child, we don’t throw them out with the dirty bath water.  In the same reasoning we should not throw out all religion just because most religions are false.  There is truth to be found and a relationship to be had with the One True God through His son Jesus Christ.  To blame God for the Spanish Inquisition would be the equivalent of blaming your doctor for your ulcer.

The film also has the Karma law of the harvest vibe.  Lorenzo’s sins seem to catch up with him no matter what country is invading Spain.  One thing we can all agree on is this world is a cruel place at times and full of pain and heart ache regardless of social status.

The movie shows us reality, but not the answer to life’s greatest questions of origin, meaning, morality, and destiny.  I will fill in that gap here in my review for anyone who cares to continue.

Jesus Christ is the answer and calls us all to die to self and come to Him.  Jesus never forced anyone to believe or do anything.  He simply offers us a choice.  Here it is in His own words:

Matthew 11: 18-30
For John didn’t spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ 19The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.”

20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns where he had done so many of his miracles, because they hadn’t repented of their sins and turned to God. 21“What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. 22I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.

23“And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. For if the miracles I did for you had been done in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today. 24I tell you, even Sodom will be better off on judgment day than you.”

25At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. 26Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!

27“My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

28Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

The Ramen Girl (2008) REVIEW - PG-13 | 1h 42min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

The Ramen Girl (2008)

PG-13 | 1h 42min | ComedyDramaRomance

Abby, an aimless American girl comes to Tokyo to be with her boyfriend, who promptly leaves for Osaka. She wants to stay in Tokyo in hopes he'll come back to her, but she's miserable: she speaks little Japanese and has a terrible job. She stumbles into the neighborhood ramen shop operated by the aging master chef Maezumi. His soup cheers Abby, so she decides to apprentice under him. He's uninterested, she's insistent, so he shouts at her and gives her all the cleaning to do.  So the magic begins.

There is a depth to this movie and addresses the heart of doing something with all your heart.

Abby is relatable and feels lost.  The language barrier is part of the charm.  She has no idea what they're saying.  I found myself laughing and wanting real ramen.  Murphy makes you think you can do anything.  Just Do it. Follow your dreams as far as you want.  It’s a risk getting out of bed.  Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Keep trying.

Maezumi:
A bowl of ramen is a self-contained universe with life from the sea, the mountains, and the earth. All existing in perfect harmony. Harmony is essential. What holds it all together is the broth. The broth gives life to the ramen.
