Memoirs of a Geisha REVIEW (2005) PG-13 | 2h 25min | Drama, Romance

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

PG-13 | 2h 25min | DramaRomance

Stars:  Ziyi ZhangKen Watanabe, Michelle Yeoh

I’ve always enjoyed romance films and this one is unique.  One life touches so many others.  The movie brings out how circumstances shape our lives much of which is totally out of our control.  What remains true is the portion we can control -- our own dreams and efforts and character we display in our dealings with others.    I’m always fascinated with other cultures and periods of the past made into film for us to enjoy.  Without these story tellers and talented actors and directors etc. most people would never know of these other cultures and periods of history.  I hope you enjoy it and thanks to all who had part in making this film.

A few quotes I enjoyed:

Mameha: [explaining sex to Sayuri]
Every once in a while, a man's "eel" likes to visit a woman's... "cave."

Sayuri: Yes, I know.

Mameha: You do?

Sayuri: I live with Hatsumomo. (another Geisha who is promiscuous)

-----------------

Geisha in Green: Mr. Chairman, shouldn't we hurry? We will miss the beginning.

Chairman: We see the spring dances every year, we can spare a moment. What's your name? Don't be afraid to look at me. Do you like sweet plum or cherry?

Chiyo: You mean... to eat?!

Chairman: I like sweet plum myself. Come. None of us find as much kindness in this life, as we should. My children wait for these every spring.

[hands her the ice and spoon]

Chiyo: [looks at geisha by the tree, smears some of the cherry ice on her lips] Now I'm a geisha too.

Chairman: [laughs] And so you are. How did you come by such surprising eyes?

Chiyo: My mother gave them to me.

Chairman: Generous of her, wasn't it?

Chiyo: As you have been to me.

Chairman: Smile for me, won't you?

[Chiyo smiles for him]

Chairman: There now, that is your gift to me.

The Greatest (2009) REVIEW -- PG-16 | 1h 39min | Drama, Romance

The Greatest (2009)

PG-16 | 1h 39min | DramaRomance

Stars: Carey MulliganAaron Taylor-JohnsonPierce Brosnan

I give strong ratings to movies that move me emotionally and have character development.  This

one delivered both.  Many folks say they cried throughout the film and I have to admit I did also.  I also found myself laughing through some of my tears. As in real life the human condition is so fragile. Its so well directed it keeps you invested.

Carey Mulligan lights up the screen. Pierce Brosnan appears in a way we have never seen him.

Death is a subject everyone eventually has to deal with and this movie was raw and sensitive to the subject.  I hope it helps those who need it.

Wonder (2017) REVIEW -- PG | 1h 53min | Drama, Family (10 stars)

Wonder (2017)

PG | 1h 53min | DramaFamily

Stars:  Jacob TremblayOwen WilsonIzabela Vidovic, Julia Roberts,

A boy with facial deformities entering 5th grade.  I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did.  Must see for all who enjoy family films. I purposely don’t give specific plot details because it ruins the movie experience in my opinion.  The less you know going in the better your viewing pleasure.

Quote:  When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.

Quote: Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle. And if you really wanna see what people are, all you have to do is look.

Its so well written and it was genius adding the back stories & perspective of random characters.  I love character development – no movie gets a 10 without it from me.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) REVIEW -- PG-13 | 2h 31min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

PG-13 | 2h 31min | ActionAdventureFantasy

Stars:   Gal GadotChris PineKristen Wiig,  Pedro Pascal

If you read comic books, you’ll like this film.  Gal Gadot is easy on the eyes no doubt.  That is worth the price of admission right there.  It is written just like the classic wonder woman tv series and comic books.  True to the genre.  The more negative reviews a film gets the more I want to see it.  As of my review IMDB.com has 6324 reviews on WW84.  Considering Casablanca (one of the best movies ever made) only has 1377 reviews that tells me WW84 was a good movie.

I rated the movie a 7 which is above average for me.  I save the 9s and 10s for films that impress me in several categories such as emotional impact on me, sublevels to story, character development, music, costume, plot, etc.  The more films you see over the course of your life you begin to realize you must save the 9s and 10s for the utter spectacular ones.  Every film can’t be your favorite.  It may be your favorite in a certain genre.  I will say this is a must see for all DC comics lovers.   As I watched --the son intrigued me more and more and his response to his father.

The plot is one I have contemplated strangely enough.  It involves the fantasy of what might happen if everyone got their greatest desires granted.  It reminded me a little of the film ‘Bruce Almighty’.  I think everyone on earth could benefit from this fantasy film.  People need to remember when watching Superhero films and critiquing them they are in the realm of fantasy (not reality).

As a rule, any fantasy film is better on the big screen.  Can’t have everything though which strangely enough is the moral of this film.  Many humans think (especially in wealthier countries) they should have everything they want when they want it.  Not only is that ridiculous, the truth is even if you got it you most certainly would not be happy.  All of life is a trade-off.  For instance, if you ate only donuts you get sick and eventually get diabetes and die sooner than you would have otherwise.  If you eat steak every day, you’d get gout and be in pain and suffer which counters the joy of eating the steak.  If you train for years and gain a spot on a professional team and actually win a championship ring the downside is you must decide whether all that effort and time training away from family and friends to get to that level was worth it.  Only you can decide that and only after you’ve already made the decision strangely enough or else you would not be qualified to answer the question.  All of life is a trade-off.  The more we try to have it all the more we ruin our lives.  This film does a great job of showing us to do the best we can with the cards we are dealt and enjoy the simple yet wonderful things along the way.  All jobs and all people have their place and have value to society.  We need plumbers and sewer workers, architects, policemen, mothers who stay home to manage the family chaos.  We need office workers, hotels, housekeepers, child care, nursing homes, veterinarians, coaches, maintenance men, brick layers, foreman, military, sailors, and the list is endless.  We need you and you need us.  That is the message. Not a one world government, but each country being the best they can be for the sake of their citizens.

Life is not easy – its not meant to be, but each human should have a chance to work and pursue their own happiness without trampling the rights of others in the process of course.  When we allow even one person to be abused by the government or schools etc. we give them the eternal right to do the same damn thing to any one of you.   It must be justice for all or we are all in trouble.  A timely example in 2021: Authorities imprisoned a small business owner named Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, of Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria in Holland, Michigan for opening.  This should never happen anywhere in the world let alone America.  Our beacon of freedom for all is worthless if this can happen within our borders.  If anyone wishes to frequent her bistro that is their business and no one else’s.  She has the right to make a living and the locals have the right to frequent her establishment as much as they desire.  No one is forcing anyone to frequent that bistro so why the imprisonment.  Those scared of Covid can stay away if they wish.  Don’t you see those who wish to shut us down have become the curse and worse than the disease.  They are tyrants forcing others to do their will.  Freedom is gone at the price of safety. We slaughter roughly a million unborn babies each year and then shut down our entire economy because one half of one percent of the population might die if they contract it.  I will add that anyone can go to the great state of Oregon and sign some papers and be put to death – it happens daily in this country.  So here is the truth of it all:  I can have myself killed legally, but a bistro owner in Michigan goes to jail for opening her business and letting guests eat 6ft apart because they say she is endangering people.  It would seem if I can choose to have an abortion or sign some papers and have myself put to death, I should be able to choose whether I want to eat in a bistro in Holland Michigan. If we fight this nonsense, we may yet save our freedoms, if not even though we sleep in our own homes, we are prisoners who are not free to pursue or own happiness but only what the state says we can pursue and when, and where we can do it.

Risk is part of life – hundreds die daily in vehicle accidents but we don’t stop driving.  Fear perpetrated by the media has cost us far too high a cost for anyone’s safety.  Our lives are our own to risk as it has always been.  Lets not let the bureaucrats slowly take away all our freedoms under the guise of keeping us SAFE.  That my friend is not freedom it is safety at way too high a cost.  As Patrick Henry said so long ago “give me liberty or give me death”!

The Invisible Man (2020) REVIEW -- R | 2h 4min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

The Invisible Man (2020)

R | 2h 4min | DramaHorrorMystery

Stars:   Elisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet Dyer

Quote:  She really does know the importance of a good closet.

It's a nail-biting experience that does not let up.  If you don’t understand the term ‘gaslighting’ you will know it after watching this.

I always felt like a presence, even if he was not there, the director made the audience just as paranoid as the lead character.  It’s reminiscent of some Hitchcock films.

Early in the movie I jumped noticeably.  I found myself looking everywhere as if I was in the movie.

I actually screamed during a chair scene.  The attic scene totally freaked me out.  Then the faucet scene I actually screamed out loud (grown man mind you).

There are plenty of twists and shockers for those scary movie lovers.  I don’t typically go for that type film personally, but I really liked this one.

Oh then the shower scene got me (what is it with showers?) so intense.  Quote:  “There you are”

I Care a Lot (2020) - REVIEW -- R | 1h 58min Crime, Thriller 9/10

I Care a Lot (2020)

R | 1h 58min   CrimeThriller

Stars:   Rosamund PikePeter DinklageEiza González

This movie will evoke emotion – You were warned.

This one will keep you on the edge of your seat. It got my blood boiling and it was so intense we almost stopped watching then the taxi driver shows up and you’re hooked.  No overused storyline here.  Wow.  If you like this movie try 'Wait Until Dark' starring Audrey Hepburn.  My son and I almost jumped out of our chairs.

If you don’t think this kind of thing is happening, think again. Utopia will never be achieved of course, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try in our little slice of life to be a force for good.  The trick is in God’s word.  Matthew 10:16 “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.

Proverbs 14:34 Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
